What the Airlines are Looking For

Typically airlines want to see applicants with Commercial and Instrument ratings and at least 1,500 hours total time… and a Multi-Engine Rating. You’ll need:

1,500 total Airplane hours
Commercial ASEL and Instrument Airplane Ratings
Commercial Multi-Engine Rating with at least 25 hrs Multi-Engine time

Program Details

A Private Pilot Certificate expands on the privileges of a Sport Pilot. A Private Pilot can fly larger, faster, and more capable aircraft. It is also the next step towards higher ratings required for a Professional Pilot / Airline Pilot career. With Hawkins Flight Academy, all flight hours and training towards a Sport Pilot Certificate count towards a Private Pilot Certificate. So if a Sport Pilot Certificate is obtained first, then a Private Pilot Certificate may be earned by meeting the additional flight hours and other requirements.

Eligibility

To earn a Private Pilot Certificate, a pilot must:

Be 17 years of age (16 to solo)
Read, speak, write and understand English
Hold at least a 3rd Class medical
Non-US Citizens need to pass a TSA Background check before training commences
US Passport or Birth Certificate (if US Citizen)
- Foreign Passport and TSA Approval if non-US Citizen for initial Sport/Private rating, Instrument Rating or Multi-Engine Rating.

Drivers License
FAA Third Class Medical Certificate (unless going for Sport Pilot Certificate)

Important Medical Note: certain medical conditions and medications are disqualifying. Please educate yourself to ensure you do not have a medical condition, psychiatric disorder, or take medication that could render you unable to earn a Third Class Medical (if required – not required for Sport Pilot). Flight Time Required

The FAA minimum flight hours required are:

40 hours total time (national average 70 +), including at least:
- 20 hours dual instruction (with a flight instructor), including
  - 3 hours dual Cross-Country training
  - 3 hours night training
  - 3 hours Instrument training
- 10 hours Solo flight, including
  - 5 hours solo Cross-Country

Required Test

Take and Pass the FAA Private (PAR) Knowledge Test (Computer Written Test)
Take and Pass a Practical Test (Checkride) consisting of an oral test and a flight test with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner
