Hawkins Adventure Flight: A Cross-Country Journey from TN to NY
Flight training isn’t just about lessons in the local area—it’s about real-world experience. At Hawkins Flight Academy, we push beyond the routine with adventure flights, giving students the chance to apply their skills in cross-country flying. Recently, we embarked on an unforgettable journey from Shelbyville, TN, to upstate New York, facing headwinds, exploring aviation history, and witnessing stunning views along the way.

The Journey Begins: Battling Headwinds & Soaring Over Scenic Landscapes
Departing from Shelbyville, we flew northeast through Kentucky and Ohio, encountering strong headwinds that tested our skills. Despite the challenge, the autumn foliage in Pennsylvania and New York made the trip unforgettable. Our first stop was Penn Yan Airport (KPEO), where we stayed at a lakeside cabin on Keuka Lake—a perfect retreat after a long day of flying.

Arrival at Penn Yan (KPEO) and Keuka Lake
Our adventure started in Shelbyville, Tennessee. After meticulously checking our planes and weather conditions, we took off, heading northeast. The flight began smoothly, but as we crossed into Kentucky, strong headwinds challenged our progress. Despite the winds slowing us down, the scenery below kept us in awe.
We made our first stop in Kentucky for fuel and a quick break, then continued into Ohio. The headwinds persisted, but so did our excitement as we neared our destination. As we crossed into Pennsylvania, the views became increasingly captivating. The landscape below transformed into a sea of vibrant autumn colors, as the leaves began changing to their fiery hues of red, orange, and gold. We could tell we were getting closer to upstate New York.

Aviation History at the Glenn Curtiss Museum
Before continuing our flight, we visited the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, NY. Curtiss, a pioneer in naval aviation, played a crucial role in early flight innovation. Exploring his legacy reminded us of how far aviation has come—and why adventure flights like this are essential for modern pilots.

Flying Over Niagara Falls & the Return Home
The highlight of the trip? Soaring over Niagara Falls, where the sheer power of the cascading water left us in awe. With tailwinds aiding our return, we reflected on the lessons learned—radio communication, navigation, and handling real-world flight challenges. This adventure wasn’t just about logging hours; it was about becoming better pilots.

For aspiring aviators, adventure flights are more than just a break from routine—they’re a leap forward in training. At Hawkins Flight Academy, we believe the best learning happens beyond the classroom. Ready to take your flying to new heights? Join us on the next adventure!
